Got an Amazon "No Wholesale Distribution" notice? Check your Brand Representative role first

October 28, 2026

Stay updated.

Over the last couple of weeks, a number of sellers received a No Wholesale Distribution (NWD) notice from Amazon. Some of them were the brand owners themselves. If that was you, take a breath. Amazon has now said something specific about who this notice was meant for, and the first thing to check is one setting in your account.

I have spent about 20 years working with Amazon clients and almost 15 years solving Amazon problems. I am writing this down plainly, using Amazon's own words, so you can see what is confirmed and what is not.

What the notice is about

Amazon's help page explains the idea in simple terms:

"Some brands sell only to customers. They do not sell to wholesalers or resellers. These brands use No Wholesale Distribution (NWD)."

"Only the brand can create or update product listings for NWD brands on Amazon."

The same page describes what happens when a brand you already list becomes NWD:

"Amazon monitors brands for distribution changes. If a brand you list becomes NWD, you get a notification 15 days before we restrict the brand."

During that period, the help page lists these options: sell through your current inventory, request removal orders from Fulfillment Centers, contact the Brand Administrator to update your role, or delete your SKUs.

Who got the notice in error, and who did not

On the Amazon Seller Forums, an Amazon team member (Glenn_Amazon) posted this clarification in a reply dated October 26, 2026 (UTC):

"If you do not have the Brand Representative role for this brand, you must stop selling its products after the sell-through period in your notification."

"If you do have the Brand Representative role for this brand, you may have received this notification in error."

"To reiterate, Sellers who had the Brand Representative role for the given Brand when they received the notification received the notification in error."

"Sellers who did not have the Brand Representative role for the given Brand when they received the notification received it intentionally. The Brand Representative role is required to sell NWD products."

Another Amazon team member (Roberto_Amazon) wrote in a reply dated October 20, 2026 (UTC):

"If your Brand Representative role is active under Brand Benefit Eligibility, your listings and inventory are not at risk."

In short, from Amazon's own staff:

  • Holds the Brand Representative role for the brand: the notice was sent in error.
  • Does not hold the role for that brand: the notice was sent intentionally, and Amazon's wording above applies.

One seller's report (not confirmed by Amazon)

In one of the same forum threads, a single seller who describes themselves as the brand owner reported that a listing was removed after the notice and that Seller Support did not help. This is one seller's account. Amazon has not confirmed it, and the account does not say which role the seller held. I mention it only because it is a reason to document everything, not as a statement about how Amazon is handling these cases.

What to do

  1. Read the notice again. Note the brand, the date, and which of your listings it names.
  2. Check your role. Amazon's help page says the Brand Administrator assigns the Brand Representative role. If you are the brand owner, look at your Brand Registry account and confirm that the role is active on your selling account. Roberto_Amazon's wording points to Brand Benefit Eligibility.
  3. If the role is missing, the help page says: "Ask your Brand Administrator to assign you the Brand Representative role. Once assigned, wait 48 hours, then try listing again."
  4. If the role is active and you still see a problem, Roberto_Amazon asked sellers to "Open a case with Seller Support, reference the NWD email you received, and include your Brand Registry enrollment details." Keep screenshots of the notice, your role page, and the case.
  5. If you resell a brand and do not hold the role, plan around the dates in your own notification and the options on Amazon's help page.

Related help page note, for sellers who have the role but still get an NWD error: Amazon says to "Contact your Brand Administrator to confirm your role is assigned correctly."

When to ask for a second pair of eyes

Most of this is a role check you can do yourself in a few minutes. If your listings are affected, the dates are close, or you are not sure which account holds the role, I am glad to take a look with you. You can reach Market Wize through the contact page. No pressure, and no need to have everything figured out first.

FAQ

What is No Wholesale Distribution (NWD) on Amazon?

Amazon describes it this way: "Some brands sell only to customers. They do not sell to wholesalers or resellers. These brands use No Wholesale Distribution (NWD)." Only the brand can create or update product listings for NWD brands.

I own the brand and I got an NWD notice. Is my listing at risk?

Amazon's team said on the Seller Forums that sellers who had the Brand Representative role when they received the notice "received the notification in error," and that "If your Brand Representative role is active under Brand Benefit Eligibility, your listings and inventory are not at risk." Confirm your role is active, and keep a copy of the notice.

I do not have the Brand Representative role. What does Amazon say?

Amazon's team wrote: "If you do not have the Brand Representative role for this brand, you must stop selling its products after the sell-through period in your notification." They also said sellers without the role received the notice intentionally.

How do I get the Brand Representative role?

According to Amazon's help page, ask your Brand Administrator to assign you the Brand Representative role, then wait 48 hours and try listing again. Amazon does not share Brand Administrator contact information.

I have the role but still see an error. What now?

Amazon's help page says to contact your Brand Administrator to confirm your role is assigned correctly. If it is, open a support case in Seller Central with the ASINs that show the error. Amazon says it reviews the evidence in 2 to 3 business days.

This page is general information based on Amazon's public pages and forum replies as of October 28, 2026. Amazon may update its guidance. Check the linked sources for the latest wording.
