Before You Switch On Amazon Real-Time Chat
Some sellers opened Buyer Messages this week and found a new switch: "Enable Real-Time Chat," with a Beta badge next to it. My first reaction: nice idea. Now, what does it ask of me?
Here's what we actually know, and what we don't.
What we know
- The switch sits in Buyer Messages in Seller Central and is marked Beta.
- The tooltip, as shown in a seller's screenshot, reads: "Turn this on to appear online and chat with customers in real-time."
- With it off, the status line reads "You are now Offline." Your presence is simply online or offline.
- Two sellers posted about it on October 26, 2026, and one said they switched it on. That points to a test with some accounts, not everyone.
- The seller who turned it on hadn't had a chat yet. They noticed nothing new on their product pages, and they still got a regular buyer message.
What we don't know yet
Amazon hasn't published an announcement or a help page for this, so the big questions are still open:
- Who gets the feature, and in which marketplaces.
- What a shopper sees, and how they start a chat.
- Whether a live chat has its own response time target, and how a missed chat is counted.
- Whether being "online" and not answering is judged any differently from a normal message.
- Whether it helps sales at all. Nobody has shared numbers.
My take
I like being early. Being early isn't the same as being careless, though.
Amazon already watches how fast you answer buyer messages. Until Amazon says how live chat is measured, treat "online" as a promise. Switch it on only for the hours someone is really sitting there to answer. If you can't staff it, leaving it off is a perfectly good choice for now.
If you do test it, keep your hours steady so you can tell what the chat changed and what the time of day changed. And write down every question shoppers ask. If the same question keeps coming up, your listing should already be answering it.
When Amazon publishes official rules, we'll update this page.
